ISC Members’ Meeting
4/13/2005 in Room 341, IMU
These minutes read and adopted at the Members’ Meeting of 4/20/2005
The meeting called to order by Commodore Schneider at 7:01. 13 persons attending (including Officers Flowers, Adkins, Trolley, Clark, Orzechowski, Schneider, and Huntley).
1. Minutes from the Members’ Meeting of 3/30/05 read and (after some clarification of the Treasurer’s report of 3/30) adopted.
2. Officers’ Reports.
A. Commodore, Lindsey:
The FUJ (the acronym was explained to those present) Regatta is scheduled for both days this weekend; 8 teams will be arriving; volunteers have been mobilized to help run the event from 8 am to 6 pm.
B. Vice Commodore, Erin:
The Information Meeting and Ground school is set for tomorrow evening, 7 until 9 in the Kirkwood Room. Helpers will be welcomed.
C. Fleet Captain, Richard:
Some potential buyers have been found for some of the Club’s wind surfer boards.
Anyone intending to use the pontoon boat and its new motor must be checked out for operating it correctly before taking chugging away from the dock.
D. Rear Commodore & Safety Officer, Todd:
The new electric key system is working well.
The RC will check with Gwen Prentice (Lake Macbride Park Ranger and DNR Officer) for mark permissions (including this weekend for the FUJ).
E. For the Harbor Master, Tom Hart:
The overhanging branches have been trimmed back and the brush hauled away for a total cost of $600 ($350 for the boom truck and trimming; $250 for the clean up). In this effort, Rec Services had shown an early willingness to help share the work or the expense, but pulled away even though they insisted on being the hiring agent.
3. There being no unfinished business, Lindsey proceeded to New Business:
Huntley informally asked the members present if they thought the Club might be interested in reviving to ancient Iowa Sailing Club traditions;
One is the weekly awarding of the Albatross (which used to be a broken barometer long since lost; but now might be a small rubber chicken that looks like it just dropped off the Ancient Mariner’s neck).
The other is the desirability of resurrecting The Sunday Bloody Races, informal races wholly within the club, lots of exchanging of helmsman and crew, lots of new members realizing the subtleties of sailing well, lots of friendships and bonding, lots of good times on the water.
A motion to this effect was proposed, but it seemed more appropriate to go forward informally, actions by the willing being more effective than legislation.
B. Huntley announced that now two 40-foot plus sloops have been chartered for the Cruising Class, one going from Key west to the Dry Tortugas and back (first week in June), and the other sailing the Chesapeake out of Annapolis (7/20 to 7/27). There is hope that a third cruise can be arranged for August.
Respectfully submitted,
John Huntley, Secretary
