Minutes from the

ISC Members’ Meeting

5/11/2005 in room 341, IMU

The meeting called to order by Commodore Schneider at 7:00, 12 persons attending.

1. Minutes from the Members’ Meeting of 4/27/2005 were read and adopted.

2. Officer’s reports:

A. Faculty advisor, Warren:

The Cat Menger acquisition is proceeding.

In light of the DNR’s need for proof of liability coverage for all “events” held on their waters, it appears that the ISC is covered for tort liability under the provisions of the University’s Std. Ops. Procedures rules.

B. 40th Reunion Leader, Jenny:

Plans for booking hotel space for visiting ISC alumni focus now on Coralville’s Baymont Inn, which offers a 25% discount on rooms (brining the cost close to $50/night).

Post card invitations (reprinted by Copy Works to correct an error of omission) will be labeled and mailed out 5/12.

The remainder of Jenny’s report was circulated by e-mail earlier:

1.)  Site:  out-building on Steve Branin and Jayne McQuillen's property.  According to Steve, the building is 40'x120'(big!) with concrete floors and fans.  There are electrical outlets every 16 feet, so plenty of power, and a refrigerator (currently filthy) is in the building, too.

2.)  I have reserved 2 port-a-potties and one handwashing station from Blue Moon Satellites at $71.40 each (total $214.20) to be delivered Friday, July 15 to the property.  Steve and Jayne already have one unit on-site.

3.)  Ann Robinson working on menu plans with Hy-Vee (Waterfront Drive) - chicken, pork loins, steaks and veg. pasta with sides, lemonade and dinnerware.  Also has priced kegs, considering cake sizes/designs.  Awaiting better estimate of attendance for final plans.

4.)  Invitation postcards - Copyworks altered the layout and accidentally cropped the RSVP phone no., currently re-printing and will finish tonight or tomorrow.  Then mailing labels must be attached and Rec. Services will mail them for us.  Hopefully in the mail by Friday!

5.)  Music - general agreement that self-made playlist and donated/discounted sound system (West Music!?) is best and most affordable.  Bands are great, but might overwhelm social atmosphere.

6.)  Robin/Ann have found great decorations, stockpiling these.  Anyone w/suggestions should talk to them!

7.)  Tables and chairs - should we do rectangles or rounds?  Rounds allow better conversation, easier to arrange, but harder to cover.  Anyone w/suggestions on cheap table covers?

8.)  Advertising - anyone know about the Alumni newsletter?  I can prepare an ad if I know who to send it to.  If no one knows, I'll contact the Alumni Assoc. and find out.

9.)  Other - working on (or will work on) memorabilia, souvenir screensaver, t-shirt design, displays, donation info., history of the club, honors to past officers, etc.

C. Commodore, Lindsey:

CPR classes are scheduled for 5/23 and 5/25 (both evenings, 6 to 10 in Room 201, Field House); to attend register with Lindsey before 5/18. Three members have already signed up.

The end-of-season internal audit of ISC financial records will be forthcoming.

3. Old business.

A. Todd’s report on updating the boat rotation policy due, but in his absence, postponed.

B. Dave’s report on strengthening the Seitech dollies due, but in his absence, postponed.

4. New business.

A. Moved (Hutley/Springsteen) to gratefully accept Erin’s offer to serve as Commodore of the club this summer while Lindsey is out of town. Motion called; passed unanimously.

B. Moved (Huntley/Adkins) that when the next tree trimming takes place (now scheduled for 5/17) that the hoisted image of Black Beard the Pirate be left in place. Motion discussed, reasons pro and con presented, question called, motion passes (11 Aye, 1 Nay).

C. Richard proposes protecting the tree-drip Pirateers with some blue tarps. Since the work comes under the purview of the Fleet Captain and entails minimal expense, consensus held that Richard proceed as he sees fit.

5. Announcements, etc.

A. Commodore Lindsey exptended the thanks of the Club to Heather and Todd for the great work on the ISC’s web site, to Erin for thoughtful and complete teaching program, and to Richard, Dave, and Tom Hart for meticulous upkeep of boats and boathouse.

B. Erin extended the thanks of the Club to Lindsey for a season of well-run, effective, and satisfying Club meetings. A roar of unanimous approval followed.

C. Albatross, anyone? Upon hearing Richard’s report of Todd’s interesting encounter with his MC Scow (capsized, flooded, abandoned while Todd runs the shoreline back to the boathouse, and finally rescued with Richard and Bill Budelier’s assistance), the Albatross awarded in absentia and with unanimous approval to Todd B. (Hey, it happens, and this ain’t the first time; brief discussion on better flotation for the MCs.)

Respectfully submitted

John Huntley, secretary
